2008 - 2011 Programme Advisory Board

A Programme Advisory Board composed of international experts advises the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in the thematic development of its programme. The Haus receives valuable additional stimulus through its active involvement in a network of cultural organizations around the world.

Programme Advisory Board members:

Prof. Ulrich Beck

Director of the Institute of Sociology at Munich University and

Research professor at the London School of Economics (Munich / London)

Prof. Ulrich Beck is considered one of the leading German sociologists focusing on globalisation theory. He is well known for numerous publications that analyse the socio-ecological crisis dynamics of current social developments.

Johnson Chang

Curator, art critic, gallery owner (Hong Kong / Shanghai)

Johnson Chang is a leading expert on the contemporary art scene in China. In addition to serving as managing director of Hanart TZ Gallery and professor at the Chinese Art Academy in Hangzhou, Chang ‘Tsong-zung’ sits on the Board of Directors of the Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong and an Asian art consultant for the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

Dr. Vishakha N. Desai

President of Asia Society (New York)

Dr. Vishakha N. Desai is president of Asia Society in New York and director of its diverse museum and cultural programmes. She is responsible for all visual art programmes on Asia at the national and international levels, for developing exhibitions, performances, and lecture/film programmes, as well as for conferences on Asian art and culture. Under her leadership, Asia Society has become an internationally influential institution.

Prof. Manthia Diawara

Chair of the Africana Studies Department at New York University (New York)

Manthia Diawara completed a dissertation in 1985 on the politics and aesthetics of African cinema. He is considered one of the most knowledgeable experts on African film worldwide. Together with Stuart Hill, he is a member of a group of black intellectuals who, in response to living conditions in the black population, have formulated a specific approach to black cultural studies.

Van Dyke Parks

The musician, composer and arranger Van Dyke Parks was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 1943. It is hard to imagine the music industry of the past forty years without him. His extensive discography includes both interpretations of compositions by others and his own material. He has written music for the theater, cinema and television, and made a name for himself as a writer of children's books. Van Dyke Parks lives with his family in Los Angeles. He was appointed to the Advisory Board for Programs at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt at the end of 2008.

Prof. Hansjürgen Rosenbauer

Former director of RBB, TV moderator, cultural theoretician (Berlin)

Member of the supervisory board of KBB GmbH since 2007

Hansjürgen Rosenbauer studied political science, sociology and German studies in Frankfurt am Main and New York. He has worked for a variety of radio and TV broadcasters, including positions as director of the foreign news desk and the cultural, scientific and educational programming at WDR. In addition, he served as director of Ostdeutscher Rundfunk Brandenburg from its inception in 1991 to its merger with Sender Freies Berlin in May 2003. Since 2001 Rosenbauer has been president of the International Public Television Conference (INPUT).

Osvaldo Sánchez

Curator, art critic, author and director of the Museo de Arte Moderno de México (Mexico City)

Osvaldo Sánchez served as director of the Museo Tamayo in Mexico City and subsequently made a name for himself as artistic director of ‘inSite 05’, a cross-border art biennale in Tijuana and San Diego. Sanchez was born in Cuba and studied art and history at Havana University.

Samah Selim

Literary scholar, translator (Marseille)

Samah Selim is a leading expert on the Muslim and Arab worlds, the Mediterranean region and, in particular, on Egypt. For a time she worked for the esteemed Maison Méditerranéenne des Sciences de L’Homme in Aix-en-Provence, and she is currently a member of the ‘Europe in the Middle East’ research programme – a joint project between the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation and the Berlin Institute for Advanced Study.

Yusaku Imamura

Architect, Cultural Policymaker, Director of the Tokyo Wonder Site (TWS), Institute of Contemporary Art and International Cultural Exchange (Tokyo).

Yusaku Imamura is an architect, who in his capacity as adviser to the governor of Tokyo has been influential in shaping the cultural policy of the Japanese capital. The focus of his work lies in the areas of creative industries, urban planning and education. In 2001, he initiated and founded the TWS Institute as a creative platform for the international exchange of young contemporary artists and deals with future-oriented topics such as climate change, biodiversity and the change in global value systems.
